π€ CHAI Steps Up Post-Deployment Monitoring as FDA Lags Behind

With the FDA currently lacking robust post-market oversight for healthcare AI, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) is filling the gap by launching a national framework for ongoing model evaluation.
CHAI will introduce post-deployment monitoring via its model card registry, enabling health systems to report AI performance metrics using standardized language and benchmarks.
This aims to identify performance variability across different local settings and ensure AI tools remain safe and effective over time.
Founding members include top institutions like Cleveland Clinic, Stanford Medicine, Kaiser Permanente, and Mount Sinai, who are collaboratively setting the reporting standards.
The move comes amid calls for the FDA to modernize its approach, with bipartisan support for public-private partnerships to guide healthcare AI oversight.
βThere's no place, yet, anywhere, where health systems can come together to share that information and begin to have common metrics, common ways of evaluating, so you can really get to an apples to apples comparison of how these models actually work.β
- Brian Anderson, M.D.
CEO, CHAI
Why It Matters: Without proper monitoring, AI models risk degrading in performance or reinforcing inequitiesβespecially in diverse populations. CHAIβs initiative brings much-needed transparency and accountability, supporting responsible adoption while FDA oversight evolves.
π Other Highlights
Mount Sinai has launched the AI Small Molecule Drug Discovery Center to integrate AI with traditional methods, accelerating the design of novel, precise therapeutics for complex diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration.
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has partnered with Qure.ai to deploy FDA-cleared chest X-ray AI (qXR-LN) as a second read for early detection of lung nodules, aiming to improve lung cancer identification and patient outcomes through an ongoing clinical trial.
SingHealth and DukeβNUS have launched the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Institute (AIMI) to advance AI research, education, governance, and commercialisation in healthcare, alongside a new partnership with the U.S.-based CHAI to develop global best practices and AI literacy initiatives.
β¨ Industry Spotlight
MedMitra AI is an innovative healthcare technology startup founded in 2023 by Dr. Anushka Sharma and Shivangi Sharma. The company has developed autonomous AI agents designed to assist doctors with diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis tasks.
Their platform leverages multimodal inputs, including patient medical history, lab reports, and imaging data, to provide actionable insights within seconds, reducing OPD and IPD time significantly. Recently securing funding in a pre-seed round led by All In Capital and WEH Ventures, MedMitra AI aims to address the critical gap in healthcare technology that focuses on easing doctor workload rather than hospital administration or patient-facing solutions.
The company is currently operating in Jaipur with expansion plans to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, targeting both metropolitan and underserved smaller cities in India's rapidly growing healthcare AI market.

π Leveraging Datathons to Teach AI in Undergraduate Medical Education: Case Study
MDplus ran two multi-week digital datathons with about 200 medical trainees.
Participantsβ Python skills improved significantly, while Excel and GitHub skills stayed the same.
82% felt more capable of deriving clinical insights from data.
93% enjoyed the events, and 82% want to join future datathons at a cost of $28 per person.
Trainees from diverse specialties and education levels participated.
βOur results suggest that datathons can serve as valuable and effective educational experiences for medical trainees to become better skilled in leveraging data science and artificial intelligence for patient care.β
- Authors
Why It Matters: This study matters because it shows that datathons offer a practical, cost-effective way to teach AI and data science skills that are often missing from medical school curricula. By engaging diverse trainees in real-world projects, it builds confidence in using data to generate meaningful clinical insights and fosters lasting interest in AI-driven patient care. As healthcare increasingly relies on machine learning, this model provides a scalable blueprint for training the next generation of physicians.
π Other Highlights
OpenEvidence, an AI platform, provided clear, relevant, evidence-based recommendations that reinforced primary care physiciansβ treatment plans for common chronic conditions but had minimal impact on altering clinical decisions.
An international mixed-methods survey of 392 German and US mental health practitioners uncovered limited familiarity with AI-enabled tools in mental healthcare while identifying practitionersβ learning intentions, ethical readiness, and affinity for technology interaction as consistent predictors of their adoption intentions across diagnostic, treatment, feedback, and practice-management applications.
